Santa Clarita & The San Fernando Valley Main Water Line Replacement

The line from the meter to the house carries every drop you use. When it's old galvanized steel that has rusted shut, or it's leaking under the yard, it gets replaced. Jacob filmed this one through his glasses.

Signs It Needs Looking At

  1. Pressure falling

Year by year weaker water, everywhere in the house, is a narrowing line.

  2. Meter spinning

Turn everything off. If the meter still moves, water is going somewhere.

  3. Wet yard

A patch between the street and the house that never dries.

  4. Rusty water

Brown water on both hot and cold sides points to old steel pipe.

How We Handle Main Water Line Replacement

Galvanized steel water pipe rusts from the inside. The rust narrows the pipe until the pressure in the house drops, and then it leaks, usually at a threaded joint underground. If your water pressure has been falling for years and the regulator isn't the cause, an old line is the usual suspect.

A leak on the main line shows up as a wet patch that never dries, a water bill that jumps, or a meter that keeps turning with every fixture in the house shut off. That last one is the test you can do yourself today.

Replacing it means digging the trench, cutting out the old line, and running new pipe from the meter side to the house, with the main shut-off and pressure regulator done right while it's open. The video on this page was filmed through Jacob's glasses: old pipe out, new copper fitted in.

Main Water Line Replacement Questions

How do I know if my main water line is leaking?

Shut off every faucet, toilet and appliance, then look at the water meter. If its leak indicator or dial still moves, water is leaving the system somewhere. A wet spot in the yard between the meter and the house often shows where.

Who owns the water line, me or the city?

Generally the water supplier owns the meter and the line on the street side of it, and the property owner owns the line from the meter to the house. Your supplier can confirm where its side ends.
