Smell gas right now?

Leave first. SoCalGas tells customers to evacuate the area immediately and call from a safe place, and to call 911 if the leak could endanger life or property or they can't get through. If another company supplies your gas, call the number on its bill. Call us once it's been made safe.

How We Handle Gas Leak Detection

Natural gas has no smell of its own. The utility adds one, the rotten-egg smell, so you'll notice a leak. If you smell it strongly, leave, leave the door open behind you, and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Don't use a light switch, a phone or anything that can spark inside.

A faint smell near one appliance, a hissing sound, a gas bill that climbs with no reason, or a failed test from the gas company are the other ways a leak shows up. Some leaks are at a loose connector behind the stove or dryer. Some are in the line itself.

We pressure test the house gas line to confirm there's a leak, then find it fitting by fitting. Once it's found, the fix is on the next page: gas leak repair.

Gas Leak Detection Questions

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house and leave the door open. Don't turn lights on or off, don't use a phone inside, and don't start a car in an attached garage. Call your gas company or 911 from outside. Call us once it's been made safe.

How do you find a gas leak?

We pressure test the line to confirm it's holding or not, then check each fitting, valve and connector until we find where it's escaping.
